Edit ServerDescription.json Safely

Change name, password, invite code, max players, and Direct Connect fields without corrupting JSON.

Prefer panel variables

Chapter22’s egg maps variables into R5/ServerDescription.json on boot (name, invite, password flags, max players, direct connect, port). Change those in Pterodactyl first.

Manual JSON edits

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Backup R5/ServerDescription.json.
  3. Edit carefully — keep valid JSON.
  4. Start and confirm values stuck (egg may overwrite from variables).

Fields you will recognize

  • ServerName, InviteCode, Password / IsPasswordProtected
  • MaxPlayerCount
  • UseDirectConnection, DirectConnectionServerAddress, DirectConnectionServerPort

Frequently Asked Questions

Path?

Usually /R5/ServerDescription.json in the server files.

Panel variables vs JSON?

Egg startup rewrites many fields from Pterodactyl variables — prefer variables when available.

JSON corrupt?

Restore from backup; validate commas/braces before start.
